Smiley Face: A History
This cheerful icon that you see below was invented in 1964 by Harvey Ball. He designed it for an insurance company, and after he sold it to them, the company added the words "have a nice day!" to the logo. The company needed the logo because it's employee's morale was low, and it needed something they could look at to make them smile while looking at customers or talking on the phone. Now this symbol is known worldwide.
